Freedom Fast

So you are ALL in and ready to fast for food freedom or any issues keeping you from living your life fully for Christ.

Before you dive right in, here is a grounding reminder.

Fasting is not a magical tool we get to manipulate for our gain. Instead, fasting is about humbling ourselves before a Holy God and recognizing we have sinned and need His help.

Joel 2:12  “Even now,” declares the LORD, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.”

Acts 13:2  While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”

Who should fast?

We all need God and his wisdom for our lives.  Fasting is for everyone.

How Do I fast?

I prayerfully encourage you to pray and ask God how he wants you to fast.  He may have you forgo food for a set amount of time.  He could lead you to give up intercourse with your spouse ( and only if you both agree.)  or abstain from technology for a period.  Whatever God leads you to do, trust him in the process.  *And remember, to please consult your doctor before going on a food fast.  All risks and responsibilities are in your hands.*

What should I do during a fast?

  1. The first thing you want to do before beginning any fast is check in with God through prayer.  Ask God if he will meet with you during this time.
  2. Commit your time and attention to God.
  3. Begin your time together with praise and worship. It’s as simple as singing songs that honor God and saying aloud how amazing he is. Then, add in personal stories of how God has helped you throughout your life.
  4. Present your requests to God. Go ahead and ask for what you need. For example, if you are struggling with food addiction, ask God to set you free based on the truth that Jesus gave his life on the cross and rose again to set the captives free (Luke 4:18)
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,

Hebrews 6:14 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

  1. Next, ask God what steps you need to take to find true freedom from the sins that hold you hostage.
  2. Lastly, you should set aside periods of silence to listen for His answers. Notice new thoughts, old memories, or visions. Then, press in and ask what they mean and what you should do about them. For example, you might feel a need to forgive someone, repent, ask for healing or invite God into a painful time in your life.
  3. Repeat these steps for each issue throughout your time of fasting.
  4. At the end of your time with God, sincerely thank Him for meeting with you. It is ok to ask God for his wisdom and protection over all areas of your life.  Remember to check in with God for your next steps.

These eight action steps act as general guidelines, not hard and fast rules.  Be fluid in your approach to fasting, leaving room for God to move.  Have faith that he will meet you where you are.

2 Peter 1: 2 May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
